It’s been a whole year since the first post went up on this website (well, jbox.me to be specific). While I initially started this website as merely a landing page when visiting the domain, it’s become one of my biggest hobbies.
Timeline and comparison
- The older layout had a simpler blog index page
- Added short article descriptions to newer list layout
- The older layout was about 25% wider on a 16:9 display
<h1>
has been moved to below the navigation bar header- The navigation bar is more minimal
- Table of Contents and Tags added to new layout
- Better caption text contrast
Overall, the design has transitioned to a more modern, less handmade-feeling layout. Yet, hints of the older layout remain.
A fun learning experience
But other than looking at how this site has changed visually, another big part is how it has changed me: developing this website has become a major side project. I can write basic HTML and CSS. I can manage headless remote servers, know a little bit about networking, and Hugo has made me indirectly learn scripting. I learned Markdown and have practiced a lot of writing.
Overall, I’m happy I decided to design a website. It’s turned into a hobby and a source of knowledge for me; I will continue to tend this little plot of land on the internet.
