Salmon run

October 6, 2025

It’s early fall here in southern Canada, which means that the salmon run has arrived. It’s quite amazing to be able to see this event so easily despite living in a densely populated urban area. I visited 3 places to see the fish:

  1. Port Hope, Ganaraska River
  2. Étienne Brûlé Park, Humber River
  3. Erindale Park, Credit River

Port Hope had by far the most fish, enough to make the area smell like fish. While it is the most remote, it is still fairly accessible by driving and is my recommended place to visit.

Erindale Park. This fisherman spent about 2 minutes fighting and dragging the salmon to the river bank
Salmon attempts to swim up a dam’s ledge
Port Hope. It is (probably) impossible for fish to swim up this ledge because it is at over a 45 degree angle. There is a much easier ‘step’ to the left side that the fish are meant to leap up into (see next picture)
Salmon jumping into a passage made to help them migrate upstream

Vulture eating a dead salmon
Étienne Brûlé Park. I did not expect to find a vulture here
